Who we are
Approximately 100 years ago, Nakashima Foundry was established as a propeller manufacturer in Shimoishii, Okayama City.
The company achieved dramatic growth and eventually embarked on the development and manufacture of medical device, which is a completely different field.
This is how our journey began. We entered the medical devices industry in 1987.
Although we are relative newcomers to the industry, we will continue to move forward with the technology we have inherited, the human resources we have acquired and above all, our company’s strong desire to contribute to the happiness of others.
Entering a different industry
Through the manufacture of marine propellers, the company has cultivated design technology on three-dimensional (3D) free-form surfaces, and metalworking, and polishing technologies.
We decided to enter the field of medical devices after realizing that our metalworking technology could be used for manufacturing joint replacement products. Despite facing various hurdles in a completely different business sphere, we have continued to boldly take on challenges under our corporate culture of “just giving it a try.”
Acquisition of knowledge
A major turning point was the establishment of the artificial joint research group, which aims to solve problems related to it. We invited medical doctors, engineering professors and industrial researchers to join the research group, where the latest technologies and knowledge were discussed and shared with all the attendees.
As a result, " From Japan, First in the World " products were born from this group. This has inspired trust in our capabilities as a domestic medical devices manufacturer with fully integrated systems from R&D to manufacturing and sales.
A comprehensive implant manufacturer
Starting with a capital tie-up with Teijin Limited in 2015, we became a comprehensive manufacturer of orthopedics products through business acquisitions, aiming at expanding product areas and lineups.
In combining our inherited technological know-how and experimental spirit, with newly acquired unique characteristics and values, we will continuously contribute to the medical field with the strength that comes from being a fully integrated company, with in-house processes from R&D to manufacturing and sales.
